POLICY PAPER- Protecting What Matters: Towards a more confident, cohesive, and resilient United Kingdom
This publication sets out this government’s vision for a fair, tolerant and decent country and the steps we are taking to tackle threats to social cohesion.
The UK Government has published Protecting What Matters, setting out a national strategy to strengthen social cohesion, resilience, and community confidence. The policy outlines a vision for a fair, tolerant and inclusive society, alongside practical steps to address growing risks such as extremism, hate, and social division.
Central to the strategy is the expectation that everyone has a role in contributing to safe, respectful communities. It emphasises shared values, mutual respect, and the importance of building trust between individuals, communities, and public services.
The approach includes targeted action to challenge harmful behaviours, strengthen local partnerships, and improve early identification of risk. It also recognises the increasing influence of online spaces in shaping attitudes and behaviours, highlighting the need for coordinated responses across sectors.
From a safeguarding perspective, the strategy reinforces the importance of proactive, multi-agency working. While national policy provides direction, effective safeguarding remains rooted in local practice through professional curiosity, early intervention, and strong, trusted relationships that enable individuals to feel safe, included, and supported.
