NEWS STORY- Instagram Releases Alerts for Parents When Teens Search for Self-Harm/ Suicide

Meta (Instagram) has introduced new alert features designed to notify parents when a young person’s online activity may indicate they need additional support, particularly in relation to suicide or self-harm. Integrated within existing parental supervision tools, these alerts aim to encourage early awareness and timely, supportive intervention.

Alerts are only triggered following repeated patterns of concerning behaviour, helping to ensure that responses are proportionate and meaningful. Parents are also provided with guidance to support sensitive and appropriate conversations with their child.

This development reflects a continued focus on strengthening online safety measures for young people. However, it is important to recognise that digital tools can only provide part of the picture. Effective safeguarding relies on professional curiosity, strong relationships, and open communication, ensuring young people feel safe, heard, and able to access support when needed.
