NEWS STORY- OPSS launches safe vapes usage and disposal awareness campaign

New resources aimed at younger people to raise awareness of safe vapes usage and disposal.

The UK Government has launched a new vape safety awareness campaign aimed at educating young people about the safe use and disposal of vaping devices.

The campaign, led by the Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), focuses on reducing the risk of battery fires, injuries and environmental harm linked to unsafe charging and incorrect disposal of vapes.

Promoting Safer Habits

The campaign encourages simple actions to help prevent accidents and protect the environment, including:

  • Unplugging vapes once they are fully charged

  • Avoiding disposal in household waste or recycling bins

  • Storing used devices safely until they can be recycled

  • Returning used vapes to retailers or dedicated recycling points

Improper disposal can damage lithium batteries inside the devices, increasing the risk of fires in waste and recycling systems.

Raising Awareness Among Young People

The initiative includes posters, social media content and toolkits designed for local authorities, community groups and public safety organisations to help raise awareness of vape safety.

A Public Safety Message

For safeguarding professionals and organisations working with young people, the campaign highlights the importance of education around product safety and responsible behaviour.

By promoting safe charging and correct recycling, the campaign aims to reduce preventable injuries and environmental risks linked to vaping devices.
