PRESS RELEASE- Government launch antisemitism review into schools and colleges

Government Launches Major Antisemitism Review in Schools and Colleges- What Safeguarding Leads Need to Know

The UK government has launched an independent review into antisemitism in England’s schools and colleges, aimed at strengthening how educational settings identify, prevent and respond to antisemitic behaviour.

Why This Matters for Safeguarding

Antisemitism incidents within education settings have doubled since pre‑2023 levels, with 204 school‑related cases recorded in 2025. This stark rise has prompted urgent action to protect vulnerable pupils and staff and ensure all learners can study in a safe, inclusive environment.

What the Review Will Cover

The independent review, led by Sir David Bell, will examine:

  • How schools and colleges spot and handle antisemitic incidents

  • Whether existing policies and guidance are effective

  • How preventative measures can be improved

  • The influence of external factors like protests or geopolitical tensions on school climates

Recommendations are due by Autumn 2026 following a wide consultation with school leaders, communities, and faith groups.

Government’s Broader Commitment

This review forms part of a wider effort to improve social cohesion across education and fund resources and training to tackle antisemitism and hate. The Department for Education has already committed millions to support educators and safeguard students.

What Safeguarding Teams Should Do

  • Review current anti‑hate and safeguarding policies to ensure antisemitism is explicitly addressed

  • Update reporting procedures so that all discriminatory incidents are captured and followed up

  • Deliver training for staff on recognising and responding to antisemitic behaviour

  • Engage with parents and pupils to promote understanding and community cohesion
