NEWS STORY- DBS expands Faith in Safeguarding campaign nationally

The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) is expanding its Faith in Safeguarding campaign across England after a successful pilot in the South East.

The campaign aims to raise awareness among faith organisations about their legal duty to refer safeguarding concerns to DBS, particularly when individuals working with vulnerable groups may pose a risk.

It responds to the issue that faith organisations currently make relatively few referrals, suggesting a lack of awareness of legal responsibilities under safeguarding law.

To address this, DBS will run free in-person pop-up clinics across England, offering practical guidance on:

  • when and how to make referrals

  • how the barring process works

  • applying safeguarding rules in faith settings

The sessions are aimed at anyone involved in safeguarding within faith communities (e.g. leaders, trustees, volunteers, HR staff).

Overall, the goal is to improve understanding, increase referrals where needed, and strengthen protection for vulnerable people.
