NEWS STORY- Cracking down on sex-based harassment in public

New law will target those who harass women and girls in public because of their sex.

The government has introduced a new law to better protect women and girls from public sexual harassment and ensure safer use of public spaces.

The legislation targets behaviours such as unwanted sexual comments, threats, and intimidating conduct in places including streets, public transport, shops and other everyday environments. These actions can have a serious impact, often causing individuals to feel unsafe, anxious, and مجبورing them to change their behaviour and routines.

Under the new offence, police are now empowered to take stronger action against those who intentionally harass others because of their sex. Offenders could face criminal charges and penalties of up to two years in prison.

The law forms part of a wider government commitment to tackling violence against women and girls, with a focus on early intervention, prevention, and holding perpetrators to account. It also supports improved training, clearer guidance for police, and collaborative working with safeguarding organisations and partners.

Alongside enforcement, there is a continued emphasis on education and prevention, aiming to challenge harmful attitudes and promote safer, more respectful public environments.
